in Atlanta, Georgia, where the journey had begun. But the flight
was necessary to escape the vengeance of all the creditors.

The other road led to Texas; it was the unknown road, and
that had always been a favorite of Jay's. For he was sure if
happiness were on a familiar road, he would have already found it
and his search would have ceased.

Some years before, he had made the acquaintance of a Mexican
man who lived in the border town of Juarez, Mexico, across the
Rio Grande from El Paso.

As he was finally approaching the crossing it occurred to
Jay that he hadn't consciously considered just which road he
would take.

The road to Minneapolis would lead to his office in St.
Paul, where salesmen ran in and out like beavers, selling WebSites.
As he held the car steady headed toward the decision,
his mind drifted back to those days in St. Paul.

The office had been rented with a check that would bounce
higher than the building in which it was located, but Kristal had
a lot of experience in dealing with landlords. Once you were in
it was so much trouble trying to get you out, the landlords
instead spent their time trying to get the money out of you. So
Jay told the lady on the phone, "Probably it's a slight error
with my company. With my moving I'm sure they've just deposited
the money in my former account. You know how these big companies
are and their computers. So I will contact my company's home
office and have them send you a check direct. If there is any
