Jay knew that Julie's needs were more than to be held in his
arms.

As Jay drove Julie to the airport, it was mostly a silent
ride. He wanted to tell her he was sorry that things hadn't gone
differently. He felt sorry for her and hated to think she was
getting on that flight by herself. Yet there was nothing he
could say that was going to make it any easier. When he got back
to the hotel, he felt drained as if all his energy were gone. He
decided to have a drink and lie down to rest for a while.

It was eleven thirty before Jay woke up. He picked up the
phone and called Collen at her apartment.

"I had hoped that you would be there when I left work, but I
knew that you wouldn't be."

"Well I was asleep, and I've just woken up."

"Why don't you come over?"

"O.K., I'll see you in a little while."

Then Jay dialed Sandy's number and she sounded like she had
been asleep.

"Hey, what are you doing having an early night?"
