That evening Jay took Julie to a restaurant in the suburbs,
but they were back by ten. He didn't get out of the car; he just
let Julie out, and said, "See you later."
When Julie went into the hotel, she didn't want to go to the
room. She thought of going to the cocktail lounge, but decided
that she would pass it up, thinking "maybe" Jay would return
soon.
It was eleven-fifteen when Collen came into the parking lot.
"Hi, I was counting my hard earned cash, and separating my money
from theirs."
"Are they really that mean to you here, baby?"
"Sure. All I make here is the tips that all the fat men
leave, after trying to handle me like one of their new proper-
ties."
"Well, don't worry. We'll make the pain go away. Want to
have a drink?"
"Sure at my place. When I leave this damn place, I don't
like to go to another just like it, and besides, I feel all hot
and sweaty. I want to have a nice shower, smoke a joint, and have
someone to tell my troubles too."
"I'll lend you an ear, but I promise that I will hear
nothing new."
"Has it been a bad day for you?"
"No, not really, just a sign of the times."
When Collen came into the room. Jay was already in the bed,
and he lit up the joint that he had rolled from Collen's stash
while she was having her shower.
