In bed that night Julie began asking Jay about his childhood
in North Carolina and his school days. He talked very freely,
thinking of funny things that all kids do in school. He told her
about some of the tricks he and his friends had played on the
faculty during his last year at high school.
"Were you going with Sandy, then, during that last year of
school?"
"Yes, we were going to be married, but out parents didn't
like the idea."
"Why didn't you just get married anyway?"
"We weren't old enough."
"So you and she have been together all these years until
Minneapolis."
Then it hit Jay what was happening. He knew now what
Rebecca had been telling Julie. It was no secret but he had
figured if you're going to start a new life it may as well be
that, and forget the past.
"Do you plan to go back to her?"
"I haven't even thought about her."
"Have you talked to her since we've been here, or is that
why we came here? So you would be close to her."
"Look, I haven't talked to her, and, as you know, I had a
deal going when I came here. So don't try to turn things around
like that to make it sound as though the reason I wanted to come
south had something to do with my relationship with Sandy."
"So you still have a relationship with her?"
"Hell, no, I've told you I haven't even thought about her."
