That night in the hotel Jay began to feel very uncomfort-
able, as if something weren't right. He tried to pass it off as
paranoia, but it kept coming back again, and again. He felt like
he had to go . He couldn't stay in that bed any longer. He woke
Julie. "Honey, the traffic will be very light now, and I can
make good time driving."
"But we just got to bed."
"I know, but you can sleep while I drive." It was three-
thirty when Jay got everything settled, and the luggage in the
car. He had not liked it, but had settled his account at the
hotel in cash. To Jay Kristal that was something you just didn't
do when you had a pocket full of credit cards. Yet at this point
everything had to be done to make things go smoothly. It would
not be until he spoke to Tom the next week that he would find out
that he had come so very close to being arrested that night.
At four-thirty when the police arrived at the hotel, armed
with a warrant for the arrest of Jay Kristal, they phoned back to
Minneapolis to Sergeant Miller that they had just missed him.
Detective Miller wondered if the guy in Kansas City would know
where he would be heading; he would have to check it out.
Jay took all the freeways south; he was sure he could drive
straight though as far as Kentucky. He wanted to finish using
the credit cards before he got to Atlanta. It wouldn't be good
to have any charges on the cards there and then remain in the
