That night back at the hotel, it felt so good to have Julie
lying next to him. He rested well. The breakfast had just
arrived when Julie woke him. "What time is it?"
"Ten thirty."
"I'm glad you woke me; I have an appointment with Maylor.
I'll be away for the afternoon. You can go shopping."
"What do I buy?"
"What do you want?"
"I don't know."
"Here's my American Express card, and there's a list of the
places it's accepted in this brochure. So buy what you want
something pretty for the evening. Surprise me."
"Sure, but when you see the bill you might get a real
surprise."
"If you like what you get, that's all that will matter."
Jay had no sooner entered Maylor's office than the man
began, "Well, when you leave them, you leave them hot! I've just
had a call from Schroud; he says the whole city is looking for
you."
"I hope you didn't tell him that I'm here."
"Of course not. But seeing that you are, I may have some-
thing that will be of interest. Lonburger has a new deal opening
in the Chicago area. He has the offices open, but there isn't
anyone running it. So you could take over that territory if you
like."
"It sounds good on the surface, but what else is there? That has
never been my type of city. Maybe they are wired, but not quite
there. To tell you the truth Austin, or Phoenix, would be more like it."
