"O.K., but there is already that Detective Miller in the
reception."
"O.K. go back to your desk and tell him Tom will see him."
As Diane shut the door Jay instructed Tom. "When we get to
the reception, you bid me good-bye like I was the least signifi-
cant person who ever walked into this office. Then you grab him
and hustle him off to your office. After you do, tell him you
know nothing, that you just work here, and he should talk with
someone with authority. When he asks who, you tell him you will
find out and give him a call."
In the reception area Tom led the way to the door very
rapidly, turned, and shook hands with Jay, saying, "we will
consider your application. Thank you for coming by."
As soon as Jay was in his car he went directly to his
apartment. There was no time to lose. When he went into his
apartment he threw all his luggage onto the floor and bed and
began one of his rapid packing jobs. He packed all his best
clothes first in the event that a hasty departure became neces-
sary. As soon as he finished packing, he picked up the phone and
called the office.
"Hello, Diane, give me Tom. Hey, how did things go with the
dick?"
"He wanted to know what I could tell him. I told him that I
just hire salesmen in the company and hadn't been here very
long."
"That's good, man. I'll call you back later, put me back
through to Diane."
