to a private interview. I would like to introduce you to our
international director of public relations, who will tell you
all
about the positions available; I present Jay Kristal."
"Hi,
ladies and gentlemen. As my colleague has informed,
you, we have a limited number of positions available due to
expansion into the St. Paul area. We are looking for career-
minded people who can eventually take over these offices; we
are
also looking for those who will be his and her subordinates."
Tom
stood in the corner trying to look concerned; he had
heard and made the same pitch himself many times. He could see
the way Jay was looking at one girl in particular. She looked
about eighteen years old, very small, and pretty. Tom gave a
glance toward Jay as he was summing up "As I have said, we will
make our choices then call you for a private interview. So I
know who is who I would like for each of you to please take
your
application form from Mr. Haug as he comes around the room.
"I have
a master list here of all your names, as I call them
will you please stand." All the names were called and each
stood. Jay took special note of the name of the attractive girl.
When the last application finished. Jay spoke again. "I will
call your names again. This time, I would like as I call your
name for you to come forward and give me your application, then
you will be excused." All the least interesting people were
called first. One by one they came forward with their applica-
tions; finally only the young girl, Julie Mershon, was left.
