"No. She won't be in until twelve. I think she went
shopping."

At that moment, Diane came in quietly closing the door,
"There is a Sergeant Miller on the phone for you. Jay. I didn't
want to call from my desk."

"What the hell does he want?"

"I don't know."

"Do you know where he's calling from?"

"No."

"O.K., find out what you can on the phone. Tell him the
party he wishes to speak with is tied up on another line. Then
let me know what you have."

Diane returned almost instantly, "Jay, Sergeant Miller is
with the Minneapolis fraud squad; that's all I can get out of
him."

"Could this be a little game by Schroud?" Tom asked.

"Not at all; Schroud is running from the law himself."

"O.K., Diane, put him on." Jay lifted his phone. "Good
morning, may I help you?"

"This is Detective Sergeant Miller of the Minneapolis Police
fraud squad. The reason for my call is your name or rather the
name of your company came up in my investigation of Mr. Bob
McCarty of Denver."

"Oh, yes, I'm vaguely familiar with the name. He called my
office last week."

Jay felt relaxed; he knew the police never start off a
conversation by telling the reason for the inquiries.
