"Oh, very well."
She knew then, as she
had thought before, she would sleep
with this man who thought himself king of the hill. And not just
sleep with him but live in his house. She was sure he was
getting ready to ask her to lunch.
"Oh, by the way, Julie,
Tom and I have just bought some
investment property. We're going to a small cocktail party this
evening; we would be very pleased if you joined us. Your training
class will finish at six, and I guess we'll go about six thirty."
"That sounds very nice,
and I appreciate the offer," Jay
watched her hesitation knowing she was going to say no. "...but,"
she said, "Will I be properly dressed for the occasion? I mean I
only dressed for the training class."
Jay was five sentences
ahead of her and could feel her
embarrassment. He knew she had nothing to wear. "Oh, Julie,
don't concern yourself with that. We'll take care of it."
So, she wondered, was
this an advance on her salary, or the
invitation to the king's den? She accepted graciously, for she
had been reared the way many poor people are. YOU may not have
money, but you must always be immaculately clean and very
courteous.
At six thirty Kristal,
followed by Haug, met Julie in the
reception area. As they got into the car the men began to
discuss the day's activities with an air to impress Julie, who
was seated in the rear. Julie loved the plush bright blue
interior of the car; she could smell the newness. She thought to
herself, yes, things had certainly gone well.
